May is Bike Month in Pennsylvania and as part of the celebration, the 2nd Annual PA Walk and Bike Summit is being held in Harrisburg, PA, May 4, 2010.
The goal of the PA Walk and Bike Summit is to promote State Legislation that supports safe pedestrian and bicycle use throughout the state. Last year 100 people attended the rally, this year we would like to see more participants at the steps of the capitol building.
Those of us staying overnight on May 3rd are meeting at 5:30PM at the Harrisburg Comfort Inn Riverside for a reception. If you want to stay there as well, ask for the PA Walk Bike group rate.
The 2nd PA Walk and Bike pre-rally starts at 9AM Tuesday with a short bike ride or walk to the capital steps. Bicyclists are encouraged to assemble at the State Farm Show parking lot and take a short ride to the west side of the capitol. For more information contact Ross Willard of Recycle Bicycle at recyclebicycle@verizon.net. Walkers are encouraged to form groups at City Island and will walk over the bridge to the capital steps. Contact Pat Tomes at pat@railstotrails.org.
The rally starts at 10AM when State legislators, Executive Officers and walking and bicycling partners have been invited to say a few words in support of Bike Month and safe walking and bicycling throughout Pennsylvania.
During the afternoon, we will be meeting with elected officials to make our requests known.
We encourage you to join us for a briefing lunch and the afternoon meetings. Please register now so we can get a rough lunch count PA Walks and Bikes. And call your local legislators office to make an appointment to visit them in Harrisburg that afternoon.
We will have a ‘unwind’ session that afternoon at a nearby pub/facility, to share stories and enjoy the moment, time and place to be announced.
Please register to participate in the 2nd Annual PA Walk and Bike Summit.
PA Walks and Bikes is a new advocacy organization working to make walking and bicycling safer and better across PA and major sponsors of the Walk and Bike Summit. Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, Northeast Regional Office has been assisting as a planning and promotional partner for this year’s Summit.
